Overwintering Frogs and Tadpoles

Last year we had lots of tadpoles - in both our big pond, and our small pond. We moved most of them to the big pond, because they didn't seem to be developing in the small pond. So a few tadpoles were still swimming round the small pool when winter set in, and so we thought that would be the end of them.

We'll I'm happy to say that I was wrong, and thay have overwintered nicely, are now developing back legs and presumably will turn into frogs later in the year. So that's an interesting thing that I haven't seen written anywhere- tadpoles can take a full year to develop, and so far, it doesn't seem to have done them any harm.

Also today, we saw one of last years frogs swimming in the big pond - a good size and colour, and no doubt there are lots more in the garden. Just waiting for them to get really hungry and eat all the slugs :-)
